Skin Cancer Moles: Learn How to Spot Cancerous Moles
Moles are something that everyone has. Some people are actually born with moles and sometimes even the newborns have moles on their body.

Technically, moles are actually benign tumors that develop from melanocytes. Melanocytes are basically skin cells that produce skin pigment called melanin. It is yet to be understood as to why some of these melanocytes alter to become moles. However, sun exposure and genetic factors have been taken into consideration as two of the prominent cases of the condition. There are good moles and harmful moles as well – some of them turn out to be cancerous moles hat requires extensive treatment.

Skin cancer moles, though not frequent, but has been a major cause of concern among the white skinned people. Melanoma has turned out to be the most fatal skin cancer types, which results from cancerous moles. Over 46,000 Americans develop melanoma in a single year, and more than 7,700 Americans die due to melanoma in a year.

Development of Melanoma

Melanoma develops from malignant moles. Although the appearance of the moles are quite similar to the usual ones you get on the body, there are certain differences to be looked for, if you have developed a new mole or a mole is growing fast.

The development of malignant moles cannot be identified in the initial stages. It is only after observing the mole and determining its growth and other factors, it will be possible to diagnose whether or not the moles are cancerous.

The ABCD’s Of Skin Cancer Moles

Abnormal “>skin moles or malignant moles are indentified by following the ABCD model.

A stands for Asymmetry, which is the first sign of an abnormal or malignant mole. A mole is said to be asymmetric if either halves of the mole is not same in shape, size, thickness or color. The borders or edges are notched; the color is usually inconsistent and is either brown or black in color. Normal moles are symmetrical and have perfectly shaped edges.

B Stands for Border, which refers to the sides of the moles. The border, in case of skin cancer moles, is scalloped, ragged, poorly defined and blurred. Apart from being asymmetrical, this is also a common sign of malignant moles.

C stands for Color in case of malignant mole identification. The color of cancerous moles is inconsistent throughout the lesion and can as well be of varied shades, such as brown, black, white, blue, red or tan. Sometimes, one single mole can have more than one color, which is the perfect case of skin cancer moles.

D refers to the Diameter of the moles. The diameter of skin cancer moles is usually more than 6 mm. these moles are much larger in size than usual and might grow very fast.

Having larger moles does not necessarily mean that you have developed skin cancer. A doctor will usually follow a step-by-step approach of identification, diagnosis and treatment to finally determine whether or not your mole is a malignant.

However, the best way to protect your skin is to avoid sun damage and over-exposure.
